Crash victim dies

The Mason County Sheriff’s Office announced this morning that Edgar Ward, 88, Manistee, died as a result of injuries sustained in a car crash in Amber Township Sunday afternoon. Ward had been hospitalized following the crash on U.S. 10-31 near Quarterline Road. According to the sheriff’s office, Ward made a left turn with his 2005 Subaru Forester from west U.S. 10-31 onto Quarterline Road into the path of an east-bound Jeep driven by Tyler Varenhorst, 20, Scottville.

Both drivers were traveling alone.

Ward was airlifted from the scene to Spectrum Hospital in Grand Rapids. He died Tuesday.

Varenhorst was transported to Memorial Medical Center by Life EMS ambulance where he was treated and released.

In addition to the sheriff’s office, Scottville and Custer fire departments also responded.
