May 16, 2013
HAMLIN TWP. — Tickets are available for this summer’s Mason County Sports Hall of Fame banquet and organizers are looking forward to the June 22 induction at Lincoln Hills Golf Course in Ludington.
The excitement, and planning, for the unveiling and induction of the Mason County Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2013 is well underway,” President Vic Burwell said. “We know we are close, when the tickets for the induction banquet are made available to the public. The board of directors is very enthusiastic about this year’s hall of fame class as it recognizes, honors and enshrines some new areas of athletic achievement in Mason County’s Sports Heritage.”
The hall is inducting as members of this year’s class:
• Jay Hansen was one of Ludington High School’s finest aquatic performers;
• Bob Wolff was a nationally acclaimed and world class archer;
• two fast pitch softball legends in Dick Dennis and Bonita Vasicek;
• the first fast pitch softball champion from northern Michigan, the 1947 Abrahamson-Bannon team;
• Paul Spencer Peterson II, an incredible long distance All-American runner who had a sterling career at Saginaw Valley State;
• and Fred Horstman, who helped build Ludington High School’s soccer program from scratch to a state championship contender.
The banquet is at the end of a big day for the Class of 2013. The hall’s plaque unveiling will be at Historic White Pine Village in Pere Marquette Township earlier in the day. The banquet will follow.
Tickets to the banquet cost $35 per person. Tables can also be purchased as well. Tickets for the banquet can be bought at the village in person or over the phone by calling it at 231-843-4808.
The board also will recognize a male and female athlete of the year, which will be determined later this spring. The Mason County Sports Hall of Fame board members are also selling their annual raffle tickets. Each ticket costs $10 each and three prizes of $500 each will be awarded at the banquet as well.
