AMBER TWP. — Fire destroyed a garage and antique car and damaged a house this afternoon. Tom Winters was working on his 1962 Buick Skylark at his home when the fire started.

“I was just working on changing the fuel lines. I don’t know what else happened,” Winters said, sitting in his front yard watching the firefighters extinguish the fire.

Tom and his wife, Shirley, live at 1496 W. Hansen Road near Hackert (Crystal) Lake.

Initially, Scottville and Custer fire departments were dispatched to a car fire inside a garage. The first firefighter to arrived reported that there was a small fire under the car but the car quickly ignited, causing the unattached garage to catch on fire. Flames soon started fire on the house, located a few feet away from the garage. Firefighters were able to minimize damage to the home, however.

Fountain Fire Department was also called in for support.
