AMBER TOWNSHIP — An 81-year-old Scottville man died on US 10/31 near Dennis Road Thursday afternoon after the tricycle he was riding was struck by a semi-truck and trailer. According to the Mason County Sheriff’s Office, the man was riding his adult tricycle westbound on the curb of the highway when apparently the bike left the curb. He was then struck by the tire of a westbound semi-truck, driven by a 51-year-old Lowell man. The semi driver was apparently attempting to turn the truck, owned by Vesco Oil Corp. of Grand Rapids, into the driveway of Urka Auto Center.

The crash occurred about 12:40 p.m.

Cole said neither speed nor alcohol appear to have played a role in the crash, which remains under investigation.

Traffic on US 10/31 was shut down between Dennis and Brye roads and rerouted to Johnson Road. During that time, a three vehicle crash at the corner of Dennis and Johnson roads occurred, resulting in minor injuries.

As of 2:50 p.m., the highway was re-opened.

Emergency units responding to the scene included: Mason County Sheriff’s Office, Scottville Fire Department, Pere Marquette Township Fire Department, Ludington Fire Department (rescue unit dispatched but disregarded), and Life EMS.
