The Mason County Sheriff’s Office had been attempting to locate Shirley Brunson, 78, and her husband William Brunson, 92, along with their 43-year-son, William. The three had left Detroit at 7:50 a.m. Sunday en-route to their daughter’s house in Free Soil but did not arrive when expected. The sheriff’s office reported this morning that the three had been found at the casino after Shirley Brunson had apparently suffered from a medical condition and was transported to West Shore Hospital in Manistee.
SCOTTVILLE — Scottville City Commissioner Bonnie Pfefferle raised concerns about the downtown angle of parking during Monday’s city commission meeting. City Manager Amy Williams said some citizens have been complaining to Pfefferle because of the slight change of the angle of parking that was made when the street was redesigned last year. Like what was discussed last year, Williams said she informed the commission that it would cost between $10,000 to $12,000 to change the parking stripes. “A special paint was used for the lines,” Williams said. “In order to change them, it would be necessary to grind the stripes off.” Williams said one of the issues are over-sized long vehicles that park downtown. She said those vehicles should be parking in one of the two rear parking lots. She agreed that placing a center-line on South Main Street may help drivers from misunderstanding where the center of the road is. Since the bump-outs in the center of downtown were constructed drivers tend to swerve over the center of the lane, even the bump-outs do not come out any further into the lane than the rear of vehicles. She said the center-line is scheduled to be re-painted in August. The [...]

SCOTTVILLE — A high volume of lawn mowing violations and a high work volume for the Scottville Department of Public Works opened up discussion by the city commission Monday afternoon about whether the city should contract its lawn mowing of code violators. City Manager Amy Williams said Mayor Dick Macki asked the question, noting that it appeared the DPW wasn’t able to keep up with the violators. The city’s ordinance requires grass to be no longer than 6-inches long. Violators are warned once and then the city mows the lawn at a $25 service fee and the DPW employees’ regular hourly wages. Some lawns can cost up to $80 per mowing, Williams said. If the fines are not paid, a lien is placed against the owner’s property taxes. Williams said City Attorney Tracy Thompson wanted to look into the liability of hiring a third-party contractor since technically the city itself is a third party mowing private property. Williams said another option would be to ask the DPW employees to work voluntary overtime, charging the property owners the time and a half wages instead of regular wages. She said currently the DPW is working on several projects including tearing out old [...]

By Rob Alway, Editor-in-Chief. There are a lot of basic necessities our soldiers are in need of while serving in Afghanistan. Though music is not a need, it certainly is something that helps with morale. Last year, while managing some bands in Las Vegas where he now lives, Custer Township native Eric Pehrson came up with the idea of sending CDs to the soldiers. “My brother, Brian, has served in the Army since 2000. He has spent a couple tours in Afghanistan and talked many times about how the soldiers there can never get enough music. “There are massive periods of pure boredom, a lot of it very mundane. The soldiers are always trying to find ways to kill time. Music seems to really help fill those gaps.” Last year on Veterans’ Day, Nov. 11, Eric started Songs 4 Soldiers (Songs for Soldiers). “When I originally started, I thought it would just be a little Christmas project. I wanted to send out 10 packages of three CDs each.” That little project has been on-going since, Eric has sent out nearly 390 CDs to soldiers since that time. The CDs are from bands that are not necessarily on the national scene, [...]
