A winter weather advisory will be in effect from 1 p.m. today, Wednesday, Jan. 19, until 4 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 20. Lake effect snow is expected in areas west of US 31 with possible snow accumulations of up to six inches.

Areas impacted include Mason, Oceana, Muskegon, Ottawa, Allegan, and VanBuren counties. For all those areas, the most impactful weather will be close to the lakeshore.

Lake effect snow showers will begin by early afternoon. At that time snow showers will be widespread inland to near US-131. However by early this evening the snow showers will become more concentrated north to south, near US-31. The snow bands will move around some but will continue into Thursday evening. The heaviest snowfall is expected near Big Sable Point and Little Sable Point and from near Holland, southward.

Some blowing and drifting is expected this evening. The heaviest snowfall is expected between 6 p.m. until midnight. Between midnight and 6 a.m. the snow showers are expected to be mostly off shore. They then move back inland to US-31 by 6 a.m. Thursday and will continue there into the evening on Thursday.
