FREE SOIL TOWNSHIP — Earlier this summer, a new sign was installed at the roadside memorial to Michigan State Police Trooper Paul Butterfield on Custer Road. Butterfield was killed by gunshot on that site, located between Townline and Gajeski roads, on Sept. 9, 2013, while on duty. Since that time, a small memorial was set up and has been maintained by Chuck and Shannon Comstock, who live nearby and were the first bystanders to arrive on the scene to assist Butterfield.

Steve Ryan and Stephen Story built the original sign and were supportive of the creation of a new, more permanent sign, which was created and donated by Northwoods Sign Shop of Ludington. Sonny Brydges built the flower boxes and benches at the memorial site.

The annual memorial ceremony will be held on Monday, Sept. 9 at the site beginning at 6:30 p.m.
