Dee McCumber

Obituary: Dorothy “Dee” McCumber, 56, Fountain.

Dorothy Alyce “Dee” McCumber, 56, of Fountain, died peacefully on Thursday, September 6, 2018, surrounded by her family.  Dee was born on January 6, 1962 in Washington, DC, the daughter of Robert and Dorothy (Fowler) Bender and graduated from Lakeland High School in Lakeland, Florida with the class of 1980.  On August 6, 1983, she married Ralph E. McCumber at White Pine Village in Ludington and he preceded her in death on February 11, 2000.  Dee was also preceded in death by her daughter, Alyce McCumber, in 1985, her parents, Robert and Dorothy, her in-laws Ralph and Dorothy McCumber and Jack and Lorraine Nankee, and her sister-in-law, Barbara Sheppard.

Dee was a very active presence at Mason County Eastern schools where she served as a paraprofessional and as a class advisor for almost all her children’s classes. Dee also served as the PTC President for many years, an aide for the preschool program, and as varsity cheerleading and girls soccer coach — where one of her proudest moments was leading her team to MCE’s one and only district championship. She also served as an AYSO referee and was a member of CrossRoads Church in Custer.  Her toughest and greatest job was trying to keep up with her family and their many activities.

Dee will be greatly missed by her life partner Pete Bonnett; their children, Jenn (Chuck) Mackey of Ludington, Josh Bonnett of Twin Lake, Justin (Amber) Coolman of Fountain, Meghan McCumber of Grand Rapids, Melanie (Shaun) Willoughby, and Lauren McCumber both of Fountain.  She will also be missed by her grandchildren, Joshua (Tayler) Mackey of North Carolina, Charlee and Rainee Mackey of Ludington, and arriving soon – Baby Coolman of Fountain.

A celebration of Dee’s life will be held at 6 p.m. on Monday, September 10 at Cornerstone Baptist Church in Ludington, with her pastor, The Rev. Rich Chasse officiating.  Burial will take place at McCumber Cemetery at a later date.

Friends may visit with her family on Sunday afternoon from 2 to 4 p.m. at Wyman Funeral & Cremation Services in Scottville, and Monday evening from 5 to 6 p.m. at Cornerstone Baptist Church.  Those who wish to remember Dee with a memorial donation are asked to consider CrossRoads Church in Custer or Mason County Relay for Life.
