AMBER TOWNSHIP — Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole has confirmed that the man who died in a crash on US 10-31 Saturday was 30-year-old Jacob Edward Gross of the Grayling/Roscommon area. MCP was contacted by Gross’ uncle Sunday who stated that his nephew had died in the crash, however, due to the extent of injuries, the sheriff could not confirm Gross’ identity until the medical examiner made a biological match.

Gross was a father of four children and a US Marine veteran who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, his uncle, Joseph Jaber told MCP. He had been working in the area as a heating and cooling technician and as a carpenter, Jaber said.

“He was a good father and husband,” Jaber said. Gross was driving east on US 10-31 about 1/4 mile west of Stiles Road Saturday when his vehicle crossed into the westbound lane about 6:10 p.m., according to the Mason County Sheriff’s Office. The vehicle sideswiped a westbound 2017 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck driven by Michael Stacey, 61, of Grand Rapids. Gross’ vehicle then struck a westbound Chevrolet SUV, driven by Donald Nelson, 58, of Whitehall. Nelson was hauling a lightweight sailboat. The sailboat came off the trailer and landed in the windshield of Gross’ vehicle, killing him. Stacey had minor injuries and was transported to Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital, Sheriff Kim Cole said. Nelson was uninjured. The passengers in the pickup and SUV were not injured.

Cole said it is unclear at this time if drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash and that deputies continue to investigate.

Responding to the scene, in addition to Mason County Sheriff’s Office, were Scottville Police Department, Scottville Fire Department, Ludington Fire Department, Mason County Medical Examiner’s Office, and Life EMS. Pere Marquette Township Fire Department’s ladder truck was also called to assist the sheriff’s office with documenting the scene.
