PENTWATER — In conjunction with the village’s 150th anniversary, a committee of volunteers decided to add some more excitement to the beautiful summers in Pentwater.

Movies on the Green will take place Sunday nights on the Village Green. Viewers can sit outside in their lawn chairs and watch the Hollywood stars on a 9-by-16 foot screen under the stars. Movies begin at dusk.

Movies on the Green kicks off next Sunday night, May 28, during Memorial Day weekend beginning at 8 p.m. In true Hollywood fashion, there be a photo shoot with a red carpet, said John Nagel, a committee member for the project.

The first movie will be classic film, “Back to the Future” starring Michael J. Fox. A time capsule that was buried near the Pentwater Public School during the early 1990s will be unveiled, Nagel said. Plans are to bury another time capsule in September that will be dug up in 20-25 years, Nagel said.

To go with the “Back to the Future” theme, a Delorean sports car will be on site for the movie night, Nagel said.

“We are looking back at the past and looking forward to the present and future,” Nagel said.

One of the committee members who works in Hollywood was able obtain the movie screen, Nagel said. A total cost of $8,400 to pay for the screen, projector, licensing fees for the movies and printing for advertising was offset by generous contributions from Pentwater area businesses and organizations, he said.

Movie nights are free for viewers. Popcorn will be available, and viewers can by a bucket for $10 to be used all summer. Bags of popcorn will also be available and bottled water, he said. Proceeds from the sales will go toward the Hart to Pentwater bike trail, which would extend the existing William Field Memorial Hart-Montague Trail to the village.

There will be nine movie nights total, Nagel said. Following the initial Memorial weekend kick-off, the movies will run Sunday nights, July 2 through Aug. 13, and then again on Labor Day weekend. Rain dates will be the following Thursday night, he said.

“It’s something we’ve always wanted to see happen,” Nagel said. “So, we got a group together and made it happen. This is really good for the community.”
