The following were recently sentenced in 79th District Court:

  • Rodney Leroy Saddler, 46, no address listed, pleaded guilty Feb. 8 to domestic violence and was sentenced to 34 days in jail with credit for 34 days served; 93 days discretionary jail for one year; no contact with the victim; must have domestic violence evaluation; no drugs/alcohol; subject to random PBTs; subject to random drug tests; and $220 in fines/costs.  A charge of stalking was dismissed.
  • Curtis Neil Johnson, 35, of 1964 W. Kistler Rd., Riverton Township, pleaded no contest Feb. 14 to embezzlement by an agent/trustee and was sentenced to two days in jail with credit for two days served; 93 days discretionary jail for one year; $370 in restitution; and $600 in fines/costs.
  • Shawn Lee Purgiel, 45, of 1281 W. Esther St., Amber Township, pleaded guilty Feb. 14 to driving while license suspended (DWLS) and was sentenced to one year discretionary jail for one year; no drugs/alcohol; and $665 in fines/costs.  Conviction is reportable to Secretary of State (SOS).  Charges of operating while intoxicated (OWI) or under controlled substance and possession of marijuana were dismissed.
  • Thomas Earl Smith, 20, of 504 E. Fifth St., Ludington, pleaded guilty Feb. 14 to possession of marijuana and was sentenced to one year discretionary jail for one year; no drugs/alcohol; subject to random PBTs; subject to random drug tests; and $575 in fines/costs.  Conviction is reportable to SOS.
  • Cody Allen DeHaan, 23, of 2441 Gary Rd., Traverse City, pleaded guilty Feb. 14 to DWLS and was sentenced to one day in jail with credit for one day served; one year discretionary jail for one year; and $535 in fines/costs.  Conviction is reportable to SOS.  A charge of possession of marijuana was dismissed.
  • Shawn Daniel O’Connell, 36, of 119 Bonnie St., Pere Marquette Townshp, pleaded guilty Feb. 8 to improper plates and was sentenced to two days in jail with credit for two days served; 90 days discretionary jail for one year; no drugs/alcohol; must have substance abuse evaluation; and $185 in fines/costs.  A felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – analogues was dismissed.
  • Quanta Deshown Barnes, 37, of 9885 W. US 10, Branch Township, pleaded guilty Feb. 16 to having an open intoxicant in a motor vehicle and was sentenced to pay $265 in fines/costs.  Conviction is reportable to SOS.
  • Gordon Scott O’Connor, 22, of 110 Hwy. 1479, Monticello, Kentucky, pleaded guilty Feb. 9 to failure to operate snowmobile with flow of traffic/extreme right and was sentenced to pay $180 in fines/costs.
  • Scott Nathaniel Swindlehurst, 290 S. Walhalla Rd., Branch Township, pleaded guilty Feb. 9 to failure to operate snowmobile with flow of traffic/extreme right and was sentenced to pay $180 in fines/costs.
  • Harold John O’Connor, 49, of 749 W. Jefferson, Apt. 7, Evart, pleaded guilty Feb. 9 to failure to operate snowmobile with flow of traffic/extreme right and was sentenced to pay $180 in fines/costs.
  • Kevin Michael Burton, 35, of 3790 Sass Rd., Manistee, pleaded guilty Feb. 13 to allowing a person to drive in violation of the motor vehicle code and was sentenced to two days in jail with credit for two days served; 90 days discretionary jail for one year; 12 months of probation; and $335 in fines/costs.
  • Eric William Carroll, 33, of 207 E. Second St., Scottville, pleaded guilty Feb. 13 to allowing a person to drive in violation of the motor vehicle code and was sentenced to nine days in jail with credit for nine days served; 90 days discretionary jail for one year; not to operating a vehicle until legally able to do so; 12 months of probation; and $335 in fines/costs.
  • Johnny Gerard, Jr., 58, of 867 Bob Ave., Muskegon, pleaded guilty Feb. 13 to excess bait and was sentenced to 90 days discretionary jail for one year; 12 months of probation; and $185 in fines/costs.
  • Shamsher Singh Lubana, 35, of 419 S. James St., Ludington, pleaded guilty Feb. 14 to violating the tobacco products tax act and was sentenced to pay $285 in fines/costs. 

Dismissals

  • Philip Lee O’Connell, 23, of 6302 N. Jenks Rd., Baldwin, had charges of operating a vehicle while license suspended (OWLS), unlawful plates, and operating a vehicle without security (no insurance) dismissed on Feb. 7 without prejudice.  According to court records, “Defendant pleaded guilty to lesser charge of allowing an unlicensed person to drive.”
  • Paul Michael Merten, 51, of 511 Johnson St. E, Hart, had a charge of operating without security (no vehicle insurance) dismissed without prejudice on Feb. 7.  According to court records, “Defendant pleaded guilty to a lesser charge.”
  • Adam Charles Jacques, 36, of 612 Adams St., Ludington, had a charge of operating without security (no vehicle insurance) dismissed without prejudice on Feb. 6.  According to court records, “Defendant pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of no proof of insurance.”
  • Amber Irene Hambley, 29, of 2932 Anthony Rd., Riverton Township, had a charge of operating without security (no vehicle insurance) dismissed without prejudice on Feb. 6.  According to court records, “Defendant pleaded guilty to improper plates, failure to transfer.”
